As a registered broker, we are authorized to help Texas consumers compare and select retail electricity plans from licensed Retail Electric Providers (REPs).

What is a Retail Electric Broker?

A retail electric broker is a company licensed by the PUCT to help consumers shop for electricity. Unlike a Retail Electric Provider (REP), we do not sell electricity directly. Instead, we:

  • Help you compare plans from multiple licensed REPs
  • Provide tools to estimate your actual costs based on your usage
  • Connect you with REPs when you're ready to enroll
  • Offer guidance on understanding plan terms and pricing

How We Are Compensated

Transparency is core to our mission. Here's exactly how Watt Owl makes money:

Referral Fees

When you enroll in an electricity plan through our platform, we may receive a referral fee from the Retail Electric Provider. This fee is typically:

  • A one-time payment per enrollment, or
  • A small ongoing commission based on your usage

Important: These fees are paid by the REP—they do not increase your electricity rate or add any cost to your bill.

Our Commitment to You

We display all plans that match your search criteria, regardless of whether they pay us a referral fee. Our plan rankings and recommendations are based on estimated cost to you, not on our compensation.

Material Relationships

Watt Owl does not have any ownership interest in, or exclusive arrangements with, any Retail Electric Provider. We maintain relationships with multiple REPs across Texas to provide you with a broad selection of plans.

If we ever have a material relationship that could affect our recommendations, we will disclose it clearly on the relevant plan listing.

Your Rights

As a Texas electricity consumer working with a broker, you have the right to:

  • Unbiased Information - Brokers must provide accurate information about available plans
  • Full Disclosure - Brokers must disclose their compensation arrangements upon request
  • Choose Freely - You are never obligated to enroll in any plan through us
  • File Complaints - If you have concerns about our conduct, you may file a complaint with the PUCT

Plan Information Accuracy

The plan information displayed on Watt Owl is sourced from:

  • Electricity Facts Labels (EFLs) published by REPs
  • The official Power to Choose website operated by the PUCT
  • Direct data feeds from participating REPs

While we strive for accuracy, electricity rates and plan terms can change. Always verify plan details directly with the REP before enrolling.

Limitations of Our Service

Watt Owl is an informational service. We do not:

  • Guarantee specific savings amounts
  • Provide binding rate quotes
  • Have authority to modify plan terms
  • Resolve billing disputes with your REP

For billing issues or disputes with your electricity provider, contact the REP directly or file a complaint with the PUCT.
